Can you provide an Installation Overview?

Return to Knowledgebase

This overview assumes you are installing Open File Manager for the first time.

Review Some Basic Information

See "Introduction", "Components" and "Installation Overview" in the online user guide. This will provide a good overview that will allow you to install and test Open File Manager.

See "Quick Start", which outlines post-installation tasks to optimize Open File Manager.

Installing the Control Component

  • The login account used during the Control Component installation must have

Administrative Rights to the machine.

  • NetWare support requires a NetWare Client on the Control Component machine. The NetWare Client can be installed before or after the Control Component. See:

"When do I need a NetWare Client"

  • Setup installs the Control Component, which is the Open File Manager administrative interface (GUI). Setup will also optionally let you install the System Component (the open file management driver that supports backups) on the same machine. You must deploy the System Component to other backup clients later, using the Control Component. For an sample installation dialogue of the Control Component,

  • Control Component files will typically be installed to C:\Program Files\St Bernard Software\OFM (Windows) by default.

The Control Component is then used by the administrator to deploy, control, and configure one or more System Components, which provide open file management on specific machines during backup operations.

Deploying one or more System Components

  • You must have Administrative Rights to each machine to which the System Component will be installed.

  • Your rights are based on your current login, or on Alternate Credentials that can be set for the target machine.

  • Each Windows or NetWare computer that requires open file management during backup must have the System Component installed.

  • Note: System Component installation creates an OFMLOG share to provide Control Component access to log information.
