Upgrading from Open File Manager v9.0 and earlier to the latest version

Return to Knowledgebase

NOTE: This section does not apply when upgrading from v9.1 or higher. It applies only to upgrades from 9.0 and earlier.

Broadly speaking, there is no real upgrade or migration path from 9.0 to the lastest version. Take the following steps tp upgrade from v9.0 or earlier:

  • Uninstall 9.0 System Components for Windows machines, using the 9.0 Control Component.

  • Uninstall 9.0 Control Component, AFTER you've uninstalled all System Components.

  • Install Control Component.

  • Install System Components for Windows machines, using the 9.x Control Component.

Uninstall 9.0 System Components for Windows, using the 9.0 Control Component

You can verify the version number of the existing System Component by right-clicking the target machine, selecting "Properties" and looking at the "System" tab for version info.

You will need to have your license number available for re-installation of the Windows target. Right-Click on the machine and do "Update Serial Number" to get the license information.

Right-click target machine and Stop System Component, and click Yes to confirm.

Note: "Stop" will cause the "Open File Manager" service on the target machine to be "Paused", and the restart status will be "Manual". This unloads the service in preparation for uninstall.

Next you'll get reboot options for the target. If you click the Yes radio button, you may enter a message for the user. You may set a delay up to 9999 minutes (roughly 17 hours), and you may check "force applications to close" to terminate processes on the target (application data loss may occur if the user has left applications open and not done a "save" for example). Alternatively, you may click the No radio button and reboot later. The existing System Component will not be fully stopped until the system is rebooted.

When the target has rebooted, run the Control Component and right-click the machine to do "UnInstall". This will remove the service and drivers.

Un-install 9.0 Control Component

Right-Click on the Control Component machine and "Stop" the System Component if one is present. You will get the following dialogue box.

Note the "Reboot Options" window does not appear. You must simply reboot the machine, launch Open File Manager and do an "UnInstall" from the Control Component machine.

At this point, you should have NO MORE GREEN CHECKMARKS for any of the machines you want to upgrade.

Exit Open File Manager, go to "Start > Programs > St Bernard Software > Open File Manager" and run the un-install. This will remove the 9.0 Control Component. Check the same items as above to make sure everything is removed.

Install the new Control Component

  • This should be straightforward; note that Open File Manager will attempt to install with the default trial serial number

  • Be sure to use your permanent production serial number during the install of the new product

Install the new System Component(s)

Install will bring up the Install OFM window, and allow entry of a non-default install path and serial number. Click Install button to install the System-Component service on the target.

Then you will get "Reboot Options" window to restart the target, which will start the System-Component on the target.

Once reboot completes, you should get a GREEN CHECKMARK and connection data displayed.
