What is Write Inactivity Period (WIP)?

Return to Knowledgebase

Essentially, this is a sustained "quiet" period when write I/O to the disks is not occurring.

  • It is 3 seconds on Windows platforms, in version 9.1 and later (this setting should not be changed).

  • It is 5 seconds by default in prior OFM versions on Windows platforms, and for all OFM versions on NetWare platforms. This parameter can be adjusted for NetWare.

Transaction based systems often have logically related I/O that occurs in many steps, i.e., a number of I/O operations to the database make up a single logical "transaction". Achieving WIP ensures:

  • Writes have ceased

  • Logically related I/O has ceased

  • Files are logically consistent

See "Write Inactivity Period and Sync Attempt Timeout" in the OFM User Manual for more information on achieving synchronization for non-NSS volumes. Note that "NSS Properties" is an additional WIP topic augmenting the regular WIP discussion for NetWare NSS volumes.
