Open File Manager - Windows Optimizations

Return to Knowledgebase

If you are experiencing synchronization problems, or you want to avoid synchronization problems, review the following links to the Open File Manager user guide, under "Optimizing Open File Manager."

  1. Coordinate System Utilities - Avoid running multiple utilities simultaneously, especially I/O intensive ones.

  2. Avoid Spurious Synchronization - Use OFM's ignore set to avoid false detections of backup activity.

  3. Release Preview Data Early - release preview data on a per-file basis during backup to reduce resource usage.

We strongly recommend you read the articles above for background information, then review the recommendations below.

System Component Configuration

If the synchronization defaults are not sufficient, launch the Control Component by going to Start > Programs > St Bernard Software > Open file Manager, and launch the Open File Manager Control Component. In the left "Network" pane, highlight the machine and right click, selecting Properties. In the "General" tab, change these values for Windows machines:

  • "Write Inactivity Period" to 3 seconds (this value should not be changed).

  • "Sync Timeout" to 120 seconds.

  • "Backup Inactivity Timeout" to 20 minutes.

Now go to the "Files" tab. The default list of files to be ignored by Open File Manager is shown below. You may Add your backup program folder(s) to the "Files to be ignored by Open File Manager" list below. This will exclude the Backup-application folders from Open File Manager open file management.

An  backup application example is shown below. You must enter a path that reflects your backup application drive, path, and folder name. Be sure to check the “Include Subdirectories" box (below) on every folder, as you add folders.

The "Browse" button (above) may be helpful in locating your folder.

Click OK to save.

Anti-Virus Configuration

  • Set your anti-virus to scan "Inbound Only," if possible.

Summary

This makes for much less overhead and decreases the chances that Open File Manager, the backup application, and the anti-virus  will conflict with each other.
