Run Scheduled Virus Scans rather than "On-Access" Scanning.

Configuring your anti-virus software to perform scheduled scans outside of the backup window will eliminate this additional I/O during backup and free up memory resources during this critical time.

Alternatively, configuring the virus scanner to scan only WRITES to the server will dramatically reduce I/O and resource utilization since backups utilize primarily READ operations.
