Why do I get an error message indicating a license violation?

Return to Knowledgebase

A license violation means:

  • The System Component is being installed on more machines than the serial number supports.

  • The System Component is being installed on a machine with an OS level that is not supported by the serial number.

  • The license is invalid.

Notes

The System Component must be installed on all local machines where files reside that need to be managed by Open File Manager during backup, and each instance of the System Component takes up one license seat.

Open File Manager's Control Component (GUI) is not licensed, and can be installed on any number of machines

When the number of supported licenses is exceeded for a given serial number, a license violation is reported in Open File Manager's log and the System Component is disabled on the machine that exceeds the license level.

A frequent mistake is to install the System Component on the same workstation where Open File Manager's Control Component is installed, when no open files need to be managed on that machine. This takes up an unintended license seat.

To avoid Open File Manager license violations, install the System Component only on those machines where open files need to be managed during backup, until you reach the number of installations supported by your serial number.
