Novell's eDirectory 8.7.3 locks up with 100% CPU utilization on NetWare 6/SP5 NSS systems

Return to Knowledgebase

FACT:
Novell's eDirectory 8.7.3 locks up with 100% CPU utilization on NetWare 6/SP5 NSS systems during backup with St. Bernard Software's Open File Manager (OFM) v9.x.

ISSUE:
We discovered an issue in Open File Manger (tm) 9.401 and earlier 9.x builds, that results in server lockups on NetWare 6.x NSS systems with eDirectory 8.x during backup with St. Bernard Software's Open File Manager v9.x. When this issue occurs, users can no longer attach to the server.

CAUSE:
A backup application asks eDirectory for files, and eDirectory needs to read the files. Since the Open File Manager System Component is a filter driver, it is in the backup application's thread. OFM redirects eDirectory to read the files from the OFM virtual device (the OFM Synchronized Volume). However, eDirectory does not close these files. Therefore, when OFM unsynchronizes and deletes its Synchronized Volume, eDirectory still has file handles attached to it. The fix is for St. Bernard Software to add "File=0x1,DOS,SYS:\_NETWARE" to OFM's default ignore set, so that OFM stays out of eDirectory's way. As a workaround, users can enter this string manually in the [GROUP] section of OFM's NLM configuration file (OFMNW.CFG) . OFM.NLM needs to be unloaded before this change is made, and the server needs to be rebooted before reloading OFM.

RESOLUTION:
This issue is corrected in Open File Manager v9.401d, and later.
