How can I Demo Open File Manager?

Return to Knowledgebase

There are several ways you can use, test, or demo Open File Manager without a lot of equipment. Below are suggestions, and are intended for users, resellers or partners who simply want some ideas.

Basic Install, Demo, Testing

With 2 machines, you can install the Open File Manager Control Component (GUI) on one machine (not NetWare), and use it to install an Open File Manager System Component on the machine to be backed up  (Windows or NetWare). You can install both components on 1 Windows machine, but 2  looks/feels more realistic.

  • 32-bit Windows systems like NT, Win2k, or Win2k3 always have the NTBackup utility built-in.

  • The agent for the Windows backup utility, NTBackup, is enabled by default.

  • Therefore, you can start backups and see status updates in the Control Component window.

Note that during installation of the Open File Manager System Component to the backup client, you need to login with administrative credentials valid for the backup client.

Evaluation

For evaluation purposes, a good approach is to find a machine with a backup log indicating "skipped open files," install Open File Manager on that machine, run a backup, and check the log file for skipped open files. This allows proof-of-concept using your own environment.
