NetWare server hangs with high CPU utilization with Virus application loaded

Return to Knowledgebase

ISSUE: NetWare server hangs with high CPU utilization when running St. Bernard Software's Open File Manager v9.x at the same time with either of the following virus protection applications:

  • NAI's (Network Associates, Incorporated) Netshield 4.61

  • Symantec's Norton Antivirus v8.1

  • CA's eTRust InocuLAN v4.5

CAUSE: We are aware of an issue that can cause high CPU utilization and server hangs on NetWare servers running Open File Manager (OFM) at the same time with any of the virus protection applications above. This issue is not related to errant virus protection functionality, nor is it the result of an incompatibility between Open File Manager and the virus protection applications. The issue was that Open File Manager was not properly ignoring (passing through) one or more of these virus protection applications' new threads or processes.

Open File Manager includes a "PassThroughAgent" list containing the names of third-party threads and processes Open File Manager needs to deliberately ignore. In this case, the PassThroughAgent list (OFMNW.PTA) did not yet incorporate one or more of the new thread or process names for the updated virus protection NLM's. Open File Manager's PTA file has now been updated to include the names of these objects.

RESOLUTION: Upgrade to the latest build of Open File Manager.
